Buffalo and Niagara Fall 2001

It's been a quiet year for the most part. And we've not taken many pictures on the digital camera. In fact, most (but not all) of these pictures were taken about 3 or 4 days after the big snowstorm of 2001 finally ended at our house. As I'm sure you know, there was a band of lake snow that kept sweeping over the Buffalo Metro area from Monday, Dec. 24 through Friday, Dec. 28 before it finally moved farther south into ski country. Here at the house, my best guessitmate is that we had around 5 feet fall. The airport got 7 feet. The snow fell over a long enough time with enough breaks (when it was falling elsewhere) for us to more-or-less keep ahead of the shoveling and snow-blowing. (It's very difficult to blow our drive when the snow is much deeper than 12 inches.) Those breaks also gave the snow ample time to compact on itself. Nonetheless, on the evening of Dec. 29 I still had to slog through 30+ inches of snow in the yard to check on the heater intake and vent which is in the side of our house that is not next to the driveway.

Snow Pictures

To really appreciate just how much snow we had, first look at our house in more normal times. Now here's a shot of the snow with roughly the same vantage point. The following table has all our snow shots.

Amy by the fence on the left side of the drive. The pile of snow behind her came off our driveway even though it's in the neighbor's back yard. Here's David next to the same pile.

On New Year's Eve, the Olympic Tourch went through our neigborhood. The blobs in the middle of the pictures is the torch.
